Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love Stihl Products Reliable Equipment. Safety switch is sort of inconvenient because I can't run at a consistent speed. Have to always keep the switch held down. Other than that, runs and operates great!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bump String Feeder is a Nightmare I bought this to replace a 15 year old string trimmer that worked great, but I wanted to upgrade and have to say I am sorry. It starts easy and trims pretty well, but I get hit with more debris than I did with my old unit and the string bump-feeder is horrible. I had read in others’ reviews the bump feeder can be a problem and discussed it with the dealer before the purchase, but he told me it only happened when the string hits stone walls or asphalt for extended periods of time and the string heats up in the feeder. Since first use I have it happen and fail within a couple of minutes of using it against our wooden raised garden beds and it when it happens I have to take the feeder apart to get it feed again. Such issues shouldn’t be a problem with a modern string trimmer and certainly not something you expect when you buy a Stihl. Each time the feeder fails, it interrupts my progress and is getting increasingly frustrating. This is the third string trimmer I have owned in the last 30 years and I have never before had this problem. Potential buyers be forewarned: this really is an issue and not operator error.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn’t make it through the first trimming. In the beginning I found it difficult to start. Once it was started the line would not feed and had to be manually pulled out. Before the yard was finished the handle broke. Took it into the dealer to get it fixed. The repair man couldn’t get the line to work properly. He removed the line inside the spool and tried tried to restring it. He was not able to get the easy string spool to work. To get it restringed he had to remove the spool and wrap both sides of line around the spool manually and then put it back on the trimmer. He tried to start it and it took him 5-6 pulls to get it started only to have it die and restarting it to see if the line would advance. After he was done with that he charged me for a new handle and said that he was not able to install it. Some of the external parts are very cheap materials.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product with lots of power Best trimmer I've ever owned. Starts right up every time. Before I purchased this trimmer I read the reviews. I was very hesitant about this buying this trimmer because of the bad reviews about the line not advancing. I would have to agree in the beginning until I spoke with my local dealer. Unlike other trimmers I've owned where you rev the motor and then bump the head, this is not the proper procedure with this one. The right way of doing it is to run the motor about three quarter throttle and bump the head while still running the motor at power. Its when you let off the throttle as your bumping the head will cause the line to tangle inside the head. As long as the engine is at speed it will work every time. No complaints here. Great trimmer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worked decent...for 15 minutes. Bought the FS50 thinking it was a decent deal. First time out, it made a loud snap while using it. But it never stopped working. 2nd time out, loud snap again, but now something has come loose and sound like it's hitting the flywheel. Shut it off, and you can shake it and hear something rattling around. It's also very loud. I have maybe 15 minutes of runtime on this unit, and now it's already in for service. I'm thinking about getting what I can out of it on Craigslist and going back to my usual brand. This was my first Stihl product, and I'm not impressed. So now I don't have a trimmer for who knows how long.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!!! WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!! This is my 4th Stihl FS40/50 series trimmer, and it is my LAST!! I do a lot of weedeating around my home, and Stihls have always held up very well (this is my 4th in about 25 years - the last one still runs well, just decided to leave it to our cabin and buy new). First up is an absolutely deplorable bump head. The bump "button" extends down so far that it is impossible to cut close, and every little uneven spot on the ground sends it bouncing upward. Maybe I should have seen this coming. When I purchased a replacement head for my last one they had redesigned it similar to this one. I got so fed up with that replacement head that I removed the bump button and advanced the line manually. Now they have managed to come up with an even worse design that makes it impossible to remove the button. Secondly, this thing is LOUD! Granted, none of the earlier versions were quiet, but this is the first time that I have felt that ear protection is an absolute must! Third is really nothing new - it still comes with a flimsy and frustrating grass guard that flops around and catches on any heavy grass. I modified the last ones - guess I will modify this one, too. :-( And lastly: Stihl, why not provide these trimmers with a J-handle like you used to? I have kept the J-handle from my first one and mounted it on all subsequent trimmers that I purchased. Even made one out of conduit for my cabin trimmer.
